Three Wheeled Buggies
Whether you’re looking for a buggy to run around in or a compact stroller for the neighborhood, three-wheeled buggies offer great mobility. Their compact design makes them easy to manoeuvre, even in tight spaces.
If you want a smooth ride with your pram, choose models with 360deg front wheels that swivel. However, they are more prone to punctures, so make sure you are prepared with a repair kit.
Sturdy frame
Recent figures have been released showing that the three-wheeled vehicle – a symbol of the noughties of more money than sanity is in a decline. Four-wheelers are replacing them, and are more versatile and easier to drive and look stylish.
The larger the wheels are the better your buggy will cope with bumpy and uneven pavements. The larger wheels on both the front and back also makes it much easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried this buggy on a newborn baby and a toddler and found it extremely durable. It was able to withstand cobbles, grass and rough pavements, as well as dirt tracks and kerbs. She said that it felt solid to push, and very solid on difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable, so require occasional pumping) come with suspension built-in, which was very comfortable for my kids.
Another thing to think about is the size of the seat and shape. You’ll want it to be big enough for your child’s comfort and you will also need it to recline for them to lie flat. Certain three-wheel buggies come with the option of lying flat that allows the child to face you, while others only allow a parent-facing one.
The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road and wet walks. It can be used as a single unit from birth and then adapts to take two children when your family grows. It is suitable for infants and toddlers from age 4 and includes a bumper bar, raincover, a better 5-point harness and large padded seat unit. The storage options are good too, with a decent-sized basket, zip pockets in the hood, and a handy pouch on the back of the seat unit.
Wheels with a greater diameter
Larger wheels will give your buggy more stability while driving on rough terrain. This is especially beneficial for off-road buggies. Additionally, they help you maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. Some three-wheeled buggies feature swivel wheels at the front to aid in maneuvering around tight corners. Others are designed to run and have fixed wheels that lock for increased speed and stability. This is particularly useful when you crash into trees or a kerb. The front wheel can be lifted slightly to avoid hitting it.
Many best 3 wheel buggy wheeled pushchairs have air-filled tyres that allow them to navigate a wide range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. They are also more susceptible to punctures, and you’ll need to have a repair kit and spare inner tube in your arsenal.
Our top three-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both of these buggies come with larger wheels that, as per MFM reviewer Kath, “perform really well on grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles” and can easily go up and down kerbs. The buggies also come with suspensions that Kath says “smooths out bumps very effectively”.
The downside of having larger wheels is that they can make some buggies quite broad and can struggle to fit through narrow spaces. This could be problematic if you intend to are using it as a jogger or have to squeeze through narrow doorways while on the move. Luckily, most models have small folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels to make compact storage.
Easy to maneuver
A three-wheel buggy can be easier to maneuver with children. They are designed so that the front wheels can rotate at a moment’s notice, and are easy to move, making them ideal for terrains that are difficult, such as cobblestones, parks, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tested a 3 wheel Umbrella stroller wheeler with her newborn and toddler and said: “The Terrain was a delight to maneuver on the ground with the swivel rear wheel being especially helpful. I was also impressed by how well it coped with kerbs, especially when using the hand-operated brake. It was very stable going downhill or on uneven terrain.”
The only drawback to this amazing mobility is that the best 3 wheel stroller wheel buggy’s bigger wheels sometimes mean that it will be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces – something to keep in mind if you live in a metropolitan region. If this is a concern then a 4-wheeler might be better for you.
